John Roberts is the consummate folk singer's folk singer. Born in Worcestershire England of Welsh parents, he emigrated to the United States in the 1960s, in his own words "to go to graduate school at Cornell, but, as they say, it didn't take. And so I became more of a folksinger than I was already". He formed a duo with fellow expat Tony Barrand, and quickly became established in the vanguard of a North American revival of interest in traditional songs from across the pond. With Tony, he performed at countless clubs and festivals, taught at folk music camps and workshops, amassed an enormous repertoire of songs, recorded a huge discography and contributed to the success of "Nowell Sing We Clear" (with Fred Bruenig, Steven Woodruff and in later years, Andy Davis), perhaps the best loved and most important travelling Christmas show in North America. John and Tony were also front and centre in the revival of English morris and sword dancing in the US and Canada.

Since Tony's withdrawal from active singing due to poor health, John has continued to perform and tour, both as a solo and with American singer Debra Cowan. He is making a rare appearance north of the border, and we hope to get a good crowd out to welcome a man who is really a legend in North American traditional music circles. Bring your voice, as there are sure to be choruses!
